We are welcoming in the first Full Moon of 2025 on Monday, January 13th in the nurturing yet emotionally complex sign of Cancer.
(For a more in-depth look at the Full Moon in general, check out the Full Moon Guide. With information on this particular moon cycle and ways you can honor yourself through ritual.)
The energy of Cancer is complicated. Nurturing, strong, and stubborn, this is the home sign for the Moon, giving it a little extra energy in the area of home (4th house). The gravitational pull of the Moon is at its strongest during the full moon phase, providing us with more of that "letting go" enegy. Almost as if the universe is asking for the energy back to transmute it into something else for us.
Cancer is the representation of the Mother in the zodiac. Full Moon energy in this area can bring to the surface some mother wounds, shifting our attention and focus to the foundations of the care we received as children. Cancer is also hidden, the moon is not seen until night and this is the energy of the shadow, the unseen. Water sign moons have a way of letting those inner feelings we try to keep hidden leak out. Water is fluid and emotional, this can bring more intense feelings to the surface.
This is when I urge people to come back to their peaceful centers. Find the place within that is still and steady and anchor yourself there. Letting go is a practice of self-love that takes time, effort and energy. You will likely have to let it go over and over again. But the good news is that you will learn to build trust with yourself like no other. Learning how to comfort yourself through the trials and tribulations of self-work is how self-love is formed.
Offering yourself love, compassion, and care while diving into inner work is a vital part of shadow work and the loving energy of Cancer helps to remind us all to tap into this natural spring of love we all have within us. When we do this, we can provide the support, love and nurturing we crave to ourselves. And then over time, we can offer this to the ones we love too.
